What is the difference between a bridal gown and a wedding dress?

Author: Annie

I’m just curious, what’s the difference between a bridal gown and a wedding dress? Some people say they’re the same but some people refer to them as if they were different.

I think a bridal gown refers to what the bridal party wears, as where the wedding dress is what the bride wears.

    None, just semantics.

i think a bridal gown is bigger, more fabric, more lace.

Nah, they’re the same. Generally, though, the expensive dresses tend to be labeled “bridal gowns” because it sounds more lavish. Store clerks are good at this, especially if they want their place to be considered “high end.”

The dress you wear to your wedding is your wedding dress. That dress can be casual and short or long, or a true gown with a train and pearls, etc. The dress that is very formal is called a bridal gown.

nothing… they are one in the same. People before me are right….the makers and shops say gown to make it sound more lavish and appealing.

They’re interchangable terms for the same thing.

Nothing, they are different words to say the same thing. However, bridal gown generally refers to a fancier, more formal dress. A wedding dress can be used to refer to those dresses/suits that some brides choose to wear for informal or weddings in a judge’s chambers.

Same. There’s also the term wedding gown. It’s just like evening dress vs. evening gown. It’s all depends on whatever you want to call it. It’s still the same article of clothing.

I’m just calling mine the ivory pouffy pretty thing. ;)

Nothing, really. The term ‘dress’ would probably refer to something less formal. Where I’m from, a traditional wedding gown is called a wedding gown.

The bridal gown is for the bride and you can’t talk of a bride without the wedding; while the wedding dress is for the wedding, and you can’t talk of wedding without the bride and groom basically. Well I haven’t seen any groom wearing any gowns so who else wears it? The bride wears it so it must be the same.

Maybe some people refer to them as different when the bride would wear something else (the bridal gown) like in the reception other than that in the wedding ceremonies itself (the wedding dress). Or that she wore a wedding dress in her civil marriage ceremonies while she wore a bridal gown in her church wedding ceremonies or vice versa.
