Bridal Gowns – Should These Always Be White?

Ever since Queen Victoria had her fabulous white wedding gown on February 11, 1840, all wedding gowns to this day had to be white. To deviate from the traditional white was preposterous, but today’s brides are ready to flaunt their choice of bridal gowns – in color and design.

Still Virginal White?

During the 1800s, bridal gowns were not splendid creations as they are now. The wedding attire for women at that time were usually the best dress that could be worn for other occasions, and these weren’t white because white cloth was expensive and only for the moneyed or landed gentry. It took the Queen of England to change the humdrum existence of the wedding dress.

Queen Victoria wore a flowing white gown accented with orange blossoms. On her head, she also wore a wreath of orange blossoms while her face was framed in honiton lace. She had 12 bridesmaids also dressed remarkably dressed in white.

But that was in 1800s. Today’s brides are experimenting with other colors for their bridal gowns and bridesmaids’ dresses. There may be some resistance to straying far from the traditional white gown, but it is your wedding and you can always have your say.

Instead of the usual white gown, you can opt for ivory, off-white, silver, gold, and pink. Your folks maybe aghast at your choice of color for your wedding gown, but it’s either you go for hints of the palest pink or blue, or go full blast in vibrant reds and blues. Or, you can appease your parents by wearing an ivory gown, but dressing up your bridesmaids in bold red.

Bridal Colors

Tradition is hard to break, but there is no rule that prohibits the use of vibrant colors for bridal gowns. Today’s brides want to be different, and they can dare be different. There’s the risk, though, that their choices will not meet everybody’s approval. But as long as you are satisfied with your choices, everything will be all right.

Here are some of the favorite bridal colors for wedding gowns:

* Ivory – good for women who have super fair complexion and red hair.

* Pastels – Spring brides are opting for pastels to celebrate the season.

* Silver – for avant garde brides with slim figures.

* Red – for women who love life and adventure.

* Pink – for passionate women who are ultra feminine.

* Black – for sophisticates who can really feel comfortable in this color.

To make the picture perfect, you can also have swaths of the same cloth for your shoes to match your wedding dress color.

So finally, it’s not always virginal white for brides. Colors are in, and brides are opting for colored bridal gowns to express their personality and individuality.

Figure Enhancing Shapes

After color, silhouette matters. The common outlines are a-lines, ball gowns, empire waist gowns, sheaths, and princess cuts. Ask the in-house designer to help you with your gown’s cut to flatter your figure. These friendly tips will guide in choosing your gown’s shape:

* If you’re petite, avoid the ball gown.

* If you’re wide-hipped, avoid the sheath.

Be guided with the usual rules, though. For formal weddings, have a floor length gown and a long train. For informal weddings, you can use a strapless gown, and for an outdoor wedding, a short frock can keep to the theme. When it comes to colors, you don’t have to be chained to one of those virginal white bridal gowns.

contributed by aheikens

My wedding is in 2 years, but I’m thinking that it is going to take that long finding my gown. I’m not interested in a white gown. Traditionally speaking I’m not supposed to anyway. But I really would like to have an ivory/cream colored gown with a dusty rose color underneath. I’m having a hard time finding anything on the web. Do I contact fabric stores, go to bridal shops, how do i find information on any wedding gowns?
Thanks guys for the help!

British Victorian Wedding Gowns UK

With many couples desiring to relive the golden ages by having ethnic and vintage weddings, there has been a revival by designers and wedding planners to reproduce ethnic dresses in the whole of Europe. In the UK, prominent wedding designers are now known to have a collection of antique wedding dresses and have come up with ideas on how to incorporate antique outfits with a traditional fairytale or a modern wedding arrangement in a presentable way.

UK Wedding Dress Styles

There are varieties of bridal designer collections with a UK touch. Wedding dresses from the 16th Century down to the early 20th century have been used in many weddings recently. In the 18th and 19th century weddings, brides wore many colors. It is not until the 20th century that traditional wedding gowns were embroidered in white color. A wedding gown would be passed down the family for generations and preserved for years. Many of these costume collections can be seen in British museum collections, still with their lace and satin in near perfect condition. The art of dress was at a highpoint in the British colonies during the Victorian and Edwardian era that, according to many, has never been equaled. The Victorian obsession with character, morality and grace was due to the ultimate display of the wedding dress. Their magnificence and elegance can be observed in the Cincinnati Art Museum and many websites that offer antique information on British history and traditions.

Corset Styles

In 18th Century English, a new design known as the corset was in use. The dress has an easy shape to wear and looks good on a modern woman due to its boning that releases the pressure off the diaphragm and the waist. The British style corset creates a cleavage that shows off a woman’s bust and enhances the overall appearance by compression. The corsets give the illusion of a smaller waist. This is further enhanced by intense decoration of the front with a style plus the incorporation of a new silhouette.

Today, corsets can be cut from original patterns, with or without tabs. Alternatively, they can also be modified to reflect modern styles with waists cut a little lower and even done with elastic inserts for ease and comfort. The wearer has the right of emphasizing bone channels. Having suitable interlinings with adequate boning is the key in any corset design, otherwise the wedding gown will seem to buckle at the waist.

A properly cut English wedding corset has a smooth finish from the neckline all the way down to the base. They can be produced in a wide variety of fabrics and endless ways of decorating them exist. In addition, they come with a combination of sleeve shapes.

Other Contemporary Wedding gowns

Other gowns with medieval overtures are Evelyn and Estella. Evelyn has a laced arm gauntlet with a toning skirt and hanging sleeves, while the Estella has a modern slim fitting fishtail with the elegance and style of a Victorian evening dress. Most of these weddings have undergone minor modifications before their use in modern wedding ceremonies. In any case, their original English classic look is evident and clearly discernible to an observant eye.

Many bride and groom want a wedding on summer. The wedding guests may receive a number of invitations. This leaves the guests to panic on what dress to wear for a summer wedding.

Restrain from wearing too much wedding jewelry. To wear too much glittery wedding jewelry will also compete with the bride. Wear Cubic Zirconia wedding jewelry. It is virtually hard to distinguish between Cubic Zirconia and Diamonds wedding jewelry.

Dress according to the weather. The sun fills the weather with lots of sunshine and warmth during summer. The weather may be hot and humid too. So, a tea length, strapless, or spaghetti-strap tops wedding dress is appropriate for the summer wedding. For Jewish wedding, you may want to avoid baring the shoulders.

The summer weather is perfect to show the marvelous tan skin tone. However, the skin may need to endure long hours of under the sun. A healthy dose of sunscreen will really help. Wear also your sunglasses to protect the eyes from the sun.

With beautiful weather in most days, the summer wedding has the potential for outdoor setting. The wedding can be held on garden, backyard, or beach. So, there is potential to go barefoot. Hence, a strap sandals or shoes may be appropriate for the summer wedding.

It is also important to know the level of formality. The wedding invitation will show the level of formality. If it does not show on wedding invitation, it is good idea to ask the bride or groom. The level of formality may be black tie, formal, semi-formal, beach, informal, or casual.

Avoid the white dress. The white dress will compete with the bride. Let the bride be the star of the day. As long as wedding dress does not look mourning dress, the black wedding dress will look elegant and fabulous on the summer wedding. The wedding guests who like to wear daring colors can wear pink, and red.

Choose wedding flowers as design pattern. The wedding flowers are symbol of summer as the wedding flowers are abundant on summer time. Wedding flowers are basic design pattern, but you can choose a more intricate design pattern. In that way, black wedding dress distances away from the mournful look.
